Everything You Will Need For Cesarean Section Recovery

Whether a cesarean section is a known part of your birth plan or you find yourself facing a last-minute surgery, it’s important to know what you may need to aid in your recovery.

I have had two c-sections, the first was likely but turned into an emergency delivery at 37 weeks, the second was elective at 39 weeks. Since the first was most likely going to happen, I had some time to prepare for my recovery. The second time around I knew exactly what worked, what didn’t and what brands I preferred.

Keeping in mind that many women have an unplanned cesarean section that can cause them disappointment and even trauma, I wanted to compile a no-fuss list to help a mama out! Think of it as a shopping list you can hand your significant other post-op and they won’t have trouble delivering the goods 😉

Everything You Need For A C-Section Recovery

Belly Binder

One of the most awkward feelings after abdominal surgery is the sensation of things feeling ‘loose’. Not pleasant! Wearing a binder can take some getting used to but I personally felt more put together and it eased some of the pain during those first hours/days of movement. Chances are your hospital will provide you with one but I opted to get my own one that fit better and was easy to wash.

The Right Undies

These can be regular soft, cotton underwear but watch out for anything with a seam that sits near or across your incision. I opted for high waist for a binding effect but you can also do low rise and add a separate belly binder.

Soft Wash Cloths

While you may feel the desire to scrub the hospital from your body, be gentle! Baths are not recommended immediately after surgery. Use a fragrance-free body wash and shower with your back to the water. Gently dab the incision site to clean. I like these super-soft baby wash cloths. Use another one to dab dry, separately from your bath towel.

Scar Treatment

I used this scar fading gel on my incision after my second c-section. It was a neater incision than the original and now, it’s barely visible. The level of fading is different for everyone but I promise you, it won’t always look so angry!

Nursing Pillow

After using a softer nursing pillow with my first baby, I found that I preferred the sturdier kind the second time around. The straps kept it perfectly in place above my incision and supported baby with minimal adjustments. Using a pillow to support baby will also ease any neck/back strain you may feel from all the new cradling you’ll be doing while loving on baby!

Height Adjustable Bassinet

Your choice of bassinet is personal based on aesthetic, the size of your space and how portable you need it to be. From a practical standpoint I highly recommend c-section mothers have a height adjustable bassinet. This allows you to pick up the baby directly from your bed without bending or straining.

Other:

  • GasX

It’s common to have gas pains after the procedure. Usually it can be eased with normal over-the-counter gas relief tabs.

  • Cozy Lounge Wear/ PJs

No matter how a mother has a given birth, she deserves to be comfortable postpartum. Treat yourself to cozy new lounge wear for when you come home from the hospital.

  • Compression Socks

You may receive some at the hospital but it’s good to have compression socks to reduce the risk of blood clots.

  • Water Bottle

The same goes for all postpartum and/or nursing mothers. Water intake is important. Make sure you have a bottle on hand.

  • Sanitary Products

The baby entered the world via cesarean section but unfortunately there will still be bleeding. Stock up!
